European Union Film Festival 2021

Organised by European Union Office to Hong Kong and Macao & Partners

Description

The European Union Office to Hong Kong and Macao, together with the Consulates General of the EU Member States and Switzerland, and in association with Broadway Cinematheque, presents the European Union Film Festival 2021 (EUFF2021). Now into its 12th edition, the EUFF brings 19 award-winning titles to the Broadway Cinematheque and PALACE ifc from 16 to 30 April.

The EUFF2021 will open with 438 Days, an ode to journalists who put lives at stake to investigate the truth and fight for press freedom. Directed by Jesper Ganslandt, the film is based on the true story of Swedish journalists Martin Schibbye and Johan Persson, who experienced 438 days of hell in a notorious Ethiopian jail when their hunt for truth turned into an international political game of life and death.

The festival will close with French animation Josep. French political cartoonist Aurel’s directorial debut revolves around the life of Spanish illustrator Josep Bartolí, who fought fascists during the Spanish Civil War, survived brutal French concentration camps, and eventually relocated to Mexico where he had an affair with Frida Kahlo. Blending Bartolí’s drawings into the animation, the film is not only a tribute to the late artist, but also a beautiful depiction of the healing power of art in difficult times.

Tickets are available from 26 March (Friday) 6pm. Ticket price is set at $95. bcinephile members and MOViE MOViE members can enjoy a discounted price of $76 at Broadway Cinematheque and $80 at PALACE ifc.
